Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc
Greywacke - the new wine from Kevin Judd (Cloudy Bay's winemaker from 1986 to 2008) - has been generating tremendous excitement in the wine trade recently on account of the wine being so good and there not being much of it - a mix that will no doubt push the price of subsequent vintages higher. We've got a few cases, but this will go fast, so if you are a fan of top Marlborough Sauvignon, buy now.
And the wine does live up to the hype. A delicious, nose of tangy gooseberry fruit with passion fruit hints invites you to indulge in the wine. Beautifully balanced on the palate, it's got the perfect mix (for me) of zippy green fruit (ripe gooseberry and lime) and subtle tropical hints (passion fruit and mango). However, the fruit is not so overt as to make it sickly sweet, it's done very elegantly with a lovely purity to the wine. The acidity is high but well balanced and the length of finish is massive. It's a tremendously impressive wine and I can see this becoming the new Marlborough iconic Sauvignon.
SC Rating - EXCEPTIONAL (Mike)
